BEARD CAMPAIGNERS PAY TRIBUTE TO ICONIC ACKER BILK
The Beard Liberation Front, the informal network of beard wearers, which campaigns against irrational prejudice against the hirsute, has paid tribute to Acker Bilk who has died aged 85.

Known as a jazz musician, Acker Bilk also invariably wore a goatee beard together with a bowler hat and a waistcoat.

His beard was pioneering in the music industry of the late 1950s and early 1960s when the fashion was to appear clean shaven and with suit and tie. Acker Bilk presented a rather different image and the impact was huge.

The musician kept his beard into his later years, very rarely being seen in public without the goatee.
